Debra Hintz

BIOGRAPHY

Debra Hintz was born and raised in Ann Arbor, Michigan and discovered her affinity for art in early childhood. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Western Michigan University and moved to Los Angeles in 1985 to pursue a career in graphic design.

While she moved forward in her graphic design career, Debra continued her fine art education at Mission: Renaissance where she studied for five years under Joe Severino. There, she learned the methods and skills of the Renaissance and Impressionist painters. This education gave her a strong traditional foundation in drawing and painting and it was during this time that Debra discovered her love for landscape. Her strongest influences are Courbet, Cezanne, Inness, Monet, and Van Gogh. Debra paints strictly in oils using palette knives and builds up many layers of paint on the canvas to create her emotionally driven paintings.

Debra’s work is held in private collections across the country and has been shown in juried exhibitions and group shows in Southern California and Arizona. She has won numerous awards including the prestigious Gold Medal Award from the Valley Artists Guild in 2012 and again in 2014. Debra is an exhibiting member of California Art League (formerly Valley Artists Guild where she served on the Board of Directors

for five years), the California Art Club, Oil Painters of America, and Women

Painters West.

A fellow artist friend introduced me to a few concepts that really intrigue me as an artist, all of which are difficult to translate in the western culture: Wabi-sabi, Toska and Alma. Wabi-sabi is the quintessential Japanese aesthetic. A good definition for it is a “beautiful imperfection.” It’s a beauty of things that are imperfect, modest and impermanent. Toska is a Russian word that has various shades of meaning: a deep, painful anguish; a dull ache of the soul; a longing with nothing to long for. It’s a passionate melancholy. Alma is Spanish for soul and describes a chest-beating passion deep from within. I like to call all of this the creative trinity.

A humble approach, a bit of angst and a rooted, soulful passion does indeed fuel my creativity. Painting is a raw and emotional process for me. As a landscape painter, I don’t look at a scene purely for it’s physicality. I use nature in a metaphorical way to convey my feelings, moods or state of being. For my art to be its best, the stimulus for it needs to come from an honest place inside. If I don’t feel what I am creating in a truthful way, the artwork fails. I paint strictly in oils using palette knives to create my heavily textured paintings. Ideas of renewal, resilience and hope amongst struggle are constant themes. At its core, my art is about finding refuge from my storms and celebrating the summers when they come.

ARTIST STATEMENT

“It must be good to die in the knowledge

that one has done some truthful work

and to know that, as a result,

one will live on in the memory of at least a few

and leave a good example for those who come after.”

—Vincent van Gogh, From a Letter to Theo van Gogh,

      Amsterdam, March 3, 1878

“Being an artist means: not numbering and counting,

             but ripening like a tree,

                                                 which doesn’t force its sap,

and stands confidently in the storms of spring,

not afraid that afterward summer may not come.

                                                                  It does come.”

—Rainer Maria Rilke, “Letters to a Young Poet, Letter Three”,
